BIO: Mojave King was born in Dunedin (New Zealand). King received a scholarship to attend the Australian Institute of Sport (Canberra) in 2019. He spent one year there and played for the program’s state league team.

NBL EXPERIENCE

Mojave King made his NBL debut with the Cairns Taipans at 18 years of age. He scored seven points in his first game.

Mojave King entered the NBL as part of the league’s Next Stars program, signing with the Cairns Taipans to develop his NBA draft prospects. By joining the NBL, King turned down offers from several top NCAA Division I programs, including Arizona, Baylor, Oregon, and Virginia. In his rookie season, King showed flashes of his potential, averaging 6.2 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 0.5 assists. However, the Taipans struggled throughout the season, finishing in ninth place with an 8-28 record. Despite the team’s poor performance, King gained valuable experience as he transitioned to professional basketball.

CAIRNS TAIPANS
2021/22

After a frustrating season in Cairns, where he felt his playing time was limited and hindered his NBA aspirations, Mojave King moved to the Adelaide 36ers for the 2021/22 season. King joined a 36ers team in flux, with new additions like Mitch McCarron, Kai Sotto, and Hyrum Harris, as well as imports Dusty Hannahs and Todd Withers. Despite the team’s promise, Adelaide struggled early, going winless in the first round before bouncing back in round two. King saw limited opportunities throughout the season, averaging 3.7 points, 1.1 rebounds, and 0.9 assists. Injuries to key players like Isaac Humphries and Cam Bairstow further hampered Adelaide’s playoff hopes, with the team finishing in seventh place with a 10-18 record. Though it was a challenging year for King, it marked another step in his professional development.

Mojave King currently plays for the New Zealand Breakers and has played 73 games in his NBL career. He has averaged 5.8 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 0.7 assists since entering the league in 2021.

The possibility of an NBL expansion team in Geelong has gained momentum, with league owner Larry Kestelman confirming the city is a strong candidate—provided it can secure a suitable venue. However, much like we outlined in an article a number of years ago, How the Geelong Supercats could return to the NBL within 3 years, the missing piece isn’t just a stadium, but a real estate-backed development plan to make the project financially viable. Kestelman recently acknowledged Geelong’s growing basketball scene, citing record participation numbers…

There have been championship runs in the NBL defined by dominance and the sheer weight of talent that could overwhelm opponents before the ball was tipped. The dynasties of Perth, the star-studded reign of Melbourne, and the rise of Sydney’s financial muscle all tell tales of powerhouses that knew how to stay at the top. But there has only ever been one championship like Wollongong’s in 2001—a title won through sheer resilience, a team that had no business being there until they forced their way…

Sydney Kings captain Xavier Cooks has served most of his one-month suspension for testing positive for cocaine but may still face additional disciplinary action from his club. He was provisionally suspended in early February after returning an adverse analytical finding just two days before the Kings’ sudden-death clash against Adelaide. Basketball Australia later confirmed the ban, though the club initially cited “personal leave” as the reason for his absence. Despite the violation, Sydney Kings officials reportedly want to retain Cooks, who remains under contract for…

A second Sydney NBL team is expected to be the league’s next expansion franchise, with Gold Coast, Darwin, and Canberra all encountering significant roadblocks in recent months. This broader identity would emphasize the team’s connection to Sydney’s iconic harbor while avoiding geographical constraints within the city. In addition to Harbour…
